Ravi Coltrane marks his father's centennial at the Vanguard, Zenón and Perdomo play boleros as a duo, and a City Ballet principal takes his last bow
NYC picks, jazz and classical, updated weekly
Three picks for the week of October 12: a centennial run in a basement, two players working without a rhythm section, and a farewell at the Koch that happens exactly once. The first one runs five nights, so a slow start costs you nothing. Here is where we would be.
Ravi Coltrane Centennial Celebration — Village Vanguard
John Coltrane would have turned 100 this year, and his son is marking it in the room where Coltrane recorded Live at the Village Vanguard in 1961. The band is built for the occasion: David Virelles on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass, Johnathan Blake on drums, Johnathan Finlayson on trumpet. Runs Tuesday through Saturday.

Zenón on alto and Perdomo on piano, no bass and no drums, working through the Latin American songbook both of them grew up inside. The duo format leaves nowhere to hide: every harmonic decision is audible, which is the point of the project. Two sets, 7pm and 9pm.

A New York City Ballet principal dances his farewell, on a program assembled the way a farewell should be: The Four Temperaments, Lar Lubovitch's Each In Their Own Time, a new Pam Tanowitz, and Agon. The Hindemith and the Stravinsky bracket a career spent in the company's most angular repertory. Sunday matinee, one time only.
