Brazilian jazz in Bed-Stuy, a Patitucci trio at the Vanguard, and Cole Porter at Dizzy's

NYC picks, jazz and classical, updated weekly

Three picks for the week of August 31, from a Brazilian quartet in Bed-Stuy to an all-star trio at the Village Vanguard and a Cole Porter tribute above Columbus Circle. An all-jazz week, and a strong one. Here is where we would be.

Rógerio Boccato Quarteto — Bar Lunàtico

Mon · 9:00pm New York Brazilian

Brazilian percussion master Rógerio Boccato reconvenes the original quartet from his album No Old Rain, ten years on, to play it again at Bar Lunàtico. Nando Michelin on piano, Dan Blake on saxophone, and Jay Anderson on bass fill out a group built for the spaces between rhythm and melody. Two sets in Bed-Stuy, at a room whose kitchen is worth arriving early for.

John Patitucci Trio ft. Chris Potter & Brian Blade — Village Vanguard

Tue · 8:30pm New York Jazz

Bassist John Patitucci brings a trio to the Vanguard that needs no dressing up: Chris Potter on saxophones, Brian Blade on drums. These are three of the most in-demand players in modern jazz, and stripped to a trio they leave each other enormous room to move. A marquee week at the Vanguard, running through the weekend.

Ann Hampton Callaway: I Get a Kick Out of Cole — Dizzy's Club

Fri · 7:00pm New York Vocals

Tony-nominated vocalist Ann Hampton Callaway spends the evening inside Cole Porter's songbook, from Night and Day to Every Time We Say Goodbye. Between numbers she trades in the kind of witty, well-worn storytelling that turns a standards set into something closer to theater. A stylish, warm tribute to one of the great American songwriters, high above Columbus Circle.
