Charlap holds the Vanguard, Dudamel takes Geffen Hall, and Aaron Diehl at Dizzy's

NYC picks, jazz and classical, updated weekly

Three picks for the week of September 14: an all-week Bill Charlap residency at the Village Vanguard, Gustavo Dudamel and the Philharmonic at Geffen Hall, and Aaron Diehl's trio at Dizzy's. Jazz on either end, a weighty orchestral night in the middle. Here is where we would be.

Bill Charlap Trio — Village Vanguard

Mon · 8:30pm New York jazz

Bill Charlap is the reigning poet of the American songbook, and he takes the Vanguard for the full week with David Wong on bass and Carl Allen on drums. His trios are exercises in restraint and swing, standards turned over until they give up something new. A marquee residency in the room that suits it best, running through Friday.

Dudamel Conducts Prokofiev and John Adams — David Geffen Hall

Wed · 7:30pm New York classical

Gustavo Dudamel leads the New York Philharmonic through a program that travels from mourning to triumph: John Adams's On the Transmigration of Souls, written for this city after September 11, a world-premiere co-commission from Zosha Di Castri, and Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony. It is an ambitious, heavy night, and a fitting one for the week. One performance, at Geffen Hall.

Aaron Diehl Trio — Dizzy's Club

Thu · 7:00pm New York jazz

Grammy-nominated pianist Aaron Diehl brings his trio to Dizzy's for an evening of lyrical originals and standards handled with his signature elegance. He moves as easily through Monk and Waller as through the concert hall, and the room above Columbus Circle rewards that kind of clarity. Two sets, at 7 and 9.
